SPACEBEL and IADAS: A Digital Innovation for Enhanced Forest Management
The final review of our IADAS (Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Drones And Satellites) project was a sheer success.
Launched in November 2020 under the leadership of Deltatec, IADAS represents a ground-breaking initiative applying artificial intelligence to drone and satellite imagery in order to ensure advanced data processing capacities and cost reduction.
In cooperation with Multitel, SPACEBEL has developed an innovative solution that leverages Earth observation and artificial intelligence technology to identify individual trees and classify tree species based on drone imagery. As part of our Research and Development activities, we have also investigated super-resolution algorithms to enhance Sentinel-2 resolution from 10 m to 2.5 m using deep learning techniques.
Thanks to our future IADAS service, private forest owners can have an up-to-date quantitative overview of their resources while managers can take faster and more accurate decisions regarding the preservation, management and sustainable use of their parcels.
Our offer involves drone flights and 3D modelling of the forest, combined with all the information required to manage the trees at a resolution of 5-10 cm: their number and geolocation, identification of tree species using artificial intelligence, their height, etc.
In current times of climate change and biodiversity loss, forest ecosystems are becoming extremely vital, hence the growing importance of sustainable management solutions such as IADAS.
